Company History

The Company was founded as the Fancy Fair in 1881 by John Elmes Beale on part of the site now occupied by the Bournemouth flagship store. John Elmes Beale was Mayor of Bournemouth for three years from 1902 to 1905. The Group has always made a significant contribution to the commercial life of Bournemouth and continues to do so to this day and also in the other towns in which it trades.

The Group seeks to differentiate itself by focusing its offer on specific merchandise categories (principally womenswear, menswear, gifts, cosmetics and light homewares) and targeting the particular needs of the ABC1 customer in each location.

In the late 1960’s Beales expanded into the adjoining conurbation of Poole and subsequently opening/acquiring stores in Bedford, Southport, Bolton and Winchester. In March 1995 the Company floated on the London Stock Exchange since when following a strategy of acquisition, stores have been purchased in Kendal (1999), Yeovil (1999), Worthing (2002), Ealing (2002), Tonbridge (2002) and Horsham (2006), bringing the total for the group to twelve. Our store at Ealing has since closed in October 2007.
